Samsung Enters Japan’s Mobile WiMAX Market

UQ Communications is the consortium company led by six independent companies in Japan such as KDDI, Japan’s second largest mobile service provider, Kyocera, Intel Capital. UQ Communications obtained license for Mobile WiMAX service from Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications last December.

At a press conference in Japan on Monday, UQ Communications announced that they have selected Samsung Electronics as an equipment vendor. According to UQ Communications, the necessary installation and trial will begin in Tokyo and Yokohama from February 2009 followed by commercial Mobile WiMAX nation-wide service from the summer of 2009.

Geesung Choi, President of Telecom Business in Samsung Electronics, said Samsung was excited to offer equipments to Japanese market in partnership with UQ Communications as a global leader in Mobile WiMAX technologies.

“Samsung will continue to enhance its leadership in Mobile WiMAX technology to deliver benefits to Japanese and global consumers,” President Choi added.

Samsung has been cooperating with KDDI, a major shareholder of UQ Communications, to provide Mobile WiMAX test equipments since 2005. Samsung and KDDI also worked together in 2002 to provide CDMA equipments.

Samsung has been successful in deploying Mobile WiMAX technology around the world. Mobile WiMAX service was first commercialized in Korea in June 2006. Samsung is currently providing equipments and devices to Sprint-Nextel for nation-wide commercial services in US.
